About 189 Development, LLC

Founded in 2022, 189 Development is a charitable LLC (similar to a foundation) focused on supporting not-for-profit organizations in the following areas:

1. Empowering Women and Gender Expansive People

2. Parks and Flowers

3. The Literary Arts and Libraries

4. More Livable Cities

Within these areas, we provide support for selected not-for-profit projects related to commercial real estate, strategic planning, the creation of joy and community building. We support existing organizations and programs as well as occasionally assist with launching new ones. Our support include grants, connections and assistance from our network of expert advisors. Our work is 95% focused on Rhode Island, mainly in Providence County. 

Grant Processes and Policies

Our grant process is streamlined and by invitation only (with the sole exception of support provided via Bloom Rhode Island which has an open call process.) 

We generally give under the condition of anonymity, and via project-based, or pre-scheduled, gifts and/or loans of funding. Most grants are scheduled up to three years in advance. Thus, we are not a suitable organization to approach for sponsorships or event tickets. 

Our staff currently do not sit on boards of organizations for which we are a significant supporter. However, grantees are invited to take advantage of our knowledge, connections and associated consultants in the areas of facilities selection and build-out, fundraising, strategic planning, communications and board building. 

Grantees are required to agree to the terms of our (anti) Generative AI Policy or risk their future grant eligibility. 

Background

189 Development is underwritten by contributions from two Rhode Island-based trusts. We are a member of the Grantmakers Council of Rhode Island and Rhode Island Foundation's informal council of local foundations.
